Sobriety is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as the natural state of a human body absent of the presence of drugs and alcohol. For individuals that struggle with substance abuse and/ or addiction maintaining sobriety can be an extremely challenging endeavor. Part of the recovery process from substance abuse and/ or addiction is to be active in a sober community. This can help an individual with accountability as well as provide a support network of like-minded individuals, all with a shared goal (sobriety). It is important for individuals in recovery to intentionally fill up the time that was previously used to accommodate satisfying one’s drug cravings. Attending sober events can be an excellent outlet for individuals in recovery. There are many sober events held daily, all over the country, but for some individuals figuring out how to find them can seem a bit challenging.

Where To Look

Many substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs make it a point to be privy to sober events that are held locally. Individuals that have recently completed a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program as well as those that have long since completed a program should not hesitate to reach out and ask for recommendations regarding sober events. Some sober events will be a one-time event, some may be held annually and others may be held more regularly. Some sober events may be widely advertised across social media platforms and online, whereas others may not. Therefore, word of mouth can be an excellent resource for individuals looking for sober events.

Virtual Sober Events

Now, more than ever before, there are a plethora of virtually held sober events. While for some individuals attending a virtual sober event may seem uncomfortable or even unnatural, the fact that platforms are expanding to connect sober individuals with one another can only contribute to positively expanding sober networks. There are many online resources that compile lists of various sober events, both in person and virtually, some of which include:

Remaining open to the newly widened range of how events are held and learning to appreciate their unique nuances will only expand one’s options of sober events and potential for making sober connections.
